C-Art 2014 Launched

Eden Arts’ 2014 C-Art Artist Open Studios event has been launched and is now open for applications from Cumbrian artists, designers and galleries. This year’s event will take place from 13th – 28th September and will include a new ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’ element, with artists being encouraged to take up residence in unusual or beautiful locations and venues across Cumbria.

Event organisers Eden Arts hope to build on the success of the 2013 event, in which 162 artists, designers and galleries across Cumbria opened their doors to the public. Over 25,000 studio visits were made during the 2013 event, generating £139,392 in art sales – a huge increase on previous years. A number of special events, exhibitions, workshops and talks also took place as part of the event, including the ‘C-Art at Rheged’ exhibition and the ‘C-Art Affordable Arts and Craft Fair’ at Rheged.

C-Art will look a little different in 2014, with the launch of ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’. Members will be encouraged to come out of their studios and take up residence in unusual or beautiful spaces. Maybe a local bus stop, an old ruin, a ramshackle barn, a cave, a turret or even a disused public toilet! A new website will be launched for the 2014 event, featuring a members directory, gallery and an interactive map of the open studios trail.

C-Art grows and grows, 2013 was a huge success in terms of increased visitors and sales of art, I’m sure that 2014 will be equally successful; I’m really looking forward to the creative ideas that artists come up with for art in extraordinary places, this will give people yet another reason to come to Cumbria to visit our artists”. Says Adrian Lochhead, director of Eden Arts.

Organisers are also keen to see a lot more art events, exhibitions and workshops taking place during the C-Art event fortnight, to create a country wide celebration of arts & craft. A second ‘C-Art at Rheged’ exhibition is being planned after the success of the 2013 exhibition, which had around 10,000 visitors. C-Art at Rheged 2014 will be in a new Gallery space in the heart of Rheged and exhibition submissions will be open exclusively to C-Art members.

Cumbrian based artists, designers, craftspeople or galleries who are unable to take part in the open studios fortnight in September can still benefit from the C-Art project. C-Art ‘basic’ members will be featured in the C-Art website and catalogue ‘directory’, which in 2013 featured 175 members and acted as a definitive year-round resource for art, craft and design in Cumbria. These members will also have the opportunity to be selected for the 2014 ‘C-Art at Rheged’ exhibition.

C-Art Open Studios 2013 will run from 13 September – 28 September and is now open for applications from artists, designers and galleries across Cumbria [Deadline Friday 28 February]. TO JOIN VISIT THE C-ART WEBSITE HERE or call Eden Arts on 01768 899444. The full list of participating galleries and artists can be found on the C-Art website from the beginning of June.
