CALLING ALL CREATIVES!
Kendal Calling would like to invite any one who is involved in arts within Eden to come and be a part of the event this summer. The festival has been grown form very humble beginnings and has always supported local music, arts and produce.

The festival takes place from the 30th July to 1st August and plays host to dance, music, performance art, art installations, comedy, spoken word and alot more.

If you would like to get involved then please check the contacts page at www.kendalcalling.com for direct emails. Please place EDEN ARTS in capitals in your submission.

It’s for people interested in what has been happening over the last few decades in and around life sciences: genetics, cell biology, evolution. No previous science background is needed – just an interest in how living creatures work and what scientists have been, and are, working on.

Guests are very welcome at meetings, especially at the initial session, but regular attendance will require membership of U3A, an organisation open to all of whatever age who are retired or partly so.

The group will be reading three or four books a year, selected from a clutch of really well-written, recent books available in paperback and at reasonable cost. The group’s founder, Frances Bell, says: “Some that I have found while researching titles for the group are so readable that they might be considered ‘page-turners’ to rival popular fiction, but still convey genuine science alongside the excitement of the discoveries.”

The first book under the microscope is Nick Lane’s Life Ascending: the Ten Great Inventions of Evolution, published in paperback by Profile Books. After the initial April meeting, the group will meet on the second Thursday of the month at the Evergreen Hall in Penrith (on Blue Bell Lane – click here for a map) from 10.00am till noon.

A contribution of £1 per head per meeting will be requested to cover the room hire and refreshments. For further information, contact Frances Bell, thirdunicorn@googlemail.com or 01768 892806.

Arcade …in collaboration with Eden Arts

arcade is an artist-led initiative which aims to encourage the bringing together of artists and creative practitioners working in broad ranging art forms, and to organise openly accessible events in public ‘non-gallery’ spaces.

Projects to date have been organised specific to a Victorian built walkway Lowther Arcade in Carlisle city centre, Cumbria where the area is turned into an arts ‘hotspot’ using: the main walkway and architecture, several empty shop units or windows, plus adjoining businesses throughout.

May 2008 saw the very first initiative for Arcade with artists working together in consultation with commercial property agents to create a short programme of art interventions specific to the place; establishing new art/business links and importantly highlighting issues of regeneration in the forgotten public ’space’.

Our next Project proposes the same use of the Carlisle space but additionally Arcade are now collaborating with Eden Arts in order to incorporate further empty shop use within Devonshire Arcade, Penrith: thus creating a town to town link project in enquiry which will aim to stimulate interest from both artists practice and happening in survey.

Arcade has now gathered together an eclectic and stimulating collection of artists proposals for both the Penrith and Carlisle arcades – full programme details soon to be announced!

After the success of last year’s readings at Theatre by the Lake, submissions are being sought for more.
If you are a writer living in Cumbria here’s a great opportunity to get exposure for your work at the county’s only producing theatre – Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.

Associate Director Stefan Escreet is planning free lunchtime readings in the Studio Theatre in April. These scripted readings will be undertaken by Dennis Herdman and James Nickerson (both appearing in Stones in His Pockets) and directed by Mary Papadima, TbtL Resident Director.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Each reading/performance and very short: say, a maximum of 10 minutes but really best to aim at 5 minutes. It also of course needs to be family-friendly, as it’s well before the 9 o’clock watershed.
There’s no theme – just let your imagination run riot – and the readings can be stories or poems (including extracts from longer pieces), but MUST be original work, new material and FUNNY! Think irony, satire, stand-up, farce or subtle … but not short plays.

All work will of course be credited.

The facts:
o	We only have 30 minutes to fill, so we need (short) short stories and poems.
We don’t want sketches or plays.
o	Material should be comic – as advertised.
o	There is no money involved – the event is free to attend (ticketing from box office so we can manage numbers).
o	We cannot pay the writers, but we will reserve them two seats for a reading as last time. We will also acknowledge them in the programme (if we produce one), or verbally during the readings.
o	The readings will be in the studio this year – this allows more people to attend.

Entries should be typed on single sided sheets of A4, double line spaced and either sent as a Word email attachment (preferred) or as hard copies by post, in the first instance to:

a very special concert at Maryport’s Wave Centre on 31 January. The week before, Brampton Live are confining eight of the nation’s finest singer songwriters and performance poets to a remote farmhouse on Hadrian’s Wall. With their every need attended to, free from all distractions apart from each other, they’ll be invited to seek inspiration from the unique landscape, history and community life around them.

The challenge is to create a new body of work—All Along The Wall – for a specially-commissioned 75 minute performance. The artists will be under pressure not only to write enough new material for a concert, but to premiere it almost immediately at The Wave.

The artists who have signed up for this exquisite form of torture are singer-songwriters:

Rory McLeod: 21st century troubadour, ex-circus clown and fire eater, one man soul band, poet, storyteller and multi instrumentalist.

Julie Matthews: winner (with Chris While) of the Best Duo gong at the 2009 BBC Folk Awards (and nominated eight times in previous years!), and now living in Cumbria.

Boo Hewerdine: Ivor Novello award nominee who has written songs for Eddi Reader, KD Lang, Natalie Imbruglia and many others. Appeared last month on the Andrew Marr Show (BBC1).

Jez Lowe: acclaimed singer-songwriter from the north east. Tours all over the world with his band the Bad Pennies.

Ruth Notman: up-and-coming singer and songwriter from Nottingham. Nominated as Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards in 2006.

And the poets:

Kate Fox: recently commissioned to write and perform a poem about the first hundred days of Gordon Brown’s premiership for BBC1’s The Daily Politics. Poet-in-residence on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live.

Matt Harvey: Another Saturday Live regular, and author of the weekly Desktop Poetry slot in The Guardian’s Saturday ‘Work’ section.

Elvis McGonagall: stand up poet supreme, armchair revolutionary and recumbent rocker, as well as 2006 World Poetry Slam Champion.

Tickets for the premiere of All Along The Wall are £12.00 (concessions £10.00), from The Wave Centre’s box office on 01900 811450—open every day from 10.00am—4.00pm. Please help us to make this exciting project a success by buying tickets and by spreading the word to friends and family!

The performance will be recorded by Workington-based Fellside Recordings, producing a CD which will be on sale at this year’s Brampton Live. (16-18 July are the dates for your diaries—early bird tickets will be on sale soon.) The piece will be performed again at the festival, and for a third time towards the end of the year at The Sage Gateshead—in other words, a series of performances “all along the Wall”.

There are also plans for a smaller version of the project to tour village communities in ‘Hadrian’s Wall Country’ in both Cumbria and
Northumberland during 2011.
