Jazz enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen are heading to Penrith on Sunday 15 August. Tickets are now on sale: contact 01768 863450 or www.seetickets.com. As part of the popular ‘Eden Arts presents’ programme, which has already welcomed internationally renowned acts such as comedian Bill Bailey and soul singer Earl Thomas – Kenny Ball is next line to provide first class entertainment on our very own Penrith stage.

Kenny is known as the most successful trumpet jazz player this side of the Atlantic and has been with his band for over 50 years. Judi Wright, Eden Arts promoter, said: “Kenny Ball’s classic jazz style is timeless, popular with all ages. It’s not pretentious, but it is infectious, and we’re looking forward to a great summer’s evening of entertainment.”

Kenny himself celebrated his 80th birthday last month, but their stamina and musical integrity make them as popular today as when they started out in the 1960’s. His landmark recordings of the 1960s such as ‘Midnight in Moscow’, which reached number 2 in the UK and US charts, catapulted him to worldwide fame, and since then he has become a living legend. The debut hit “Samantha” and the smash “When I’m 64”, made Kenny a household name.

Penrith Leisure Centre: Sunday 15 August, doors open 7pm. Tickets (£15) now on sale: call 01768 863450 or online at www.seetickets.com. www.kennyball.co.uk/

Probably the greatest test of an artist’s success is his durability. For more than 50 years Kenny Ball has flown the flag for his particular brand of trad jazz all over the world. It is a tribute to his stamina and musical integrity that Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen are as popular today as they were back in 1960 when they had their first chart hit with Samantha.

From that time on, hit after hit came pouring out until the final tally was fourteen top 30 records eclipsing even Kenny’s idol the great Louis Armstrong’s total – an achievement which has never been equalled by any other jazz artist. “Midnight in Moscow” was a top two hit in both the UK and the USA. The band’s popularity was further enhanced by their four-year spells on The Morecambe and Wise Show and Saturday Night at the Mill both of which were viewed by millions.

Kenny is identified with great jazz but also wonderful entertainment. Kenny, like Armstrong, believes in making jazz attractive to everyone. His records continue to sell in the hundreds of thousands. In May Kenny celebrated his 80th birthday, but shows no sign of hanging up his trumpet!

Yes its 5th December, but all the same…

More than 25 years ago Billy Bragg first took to the stage as a solo performer. His individual style and distinctive protest songs, combining elements of folk and punk, make him a respected and revered figure in the industry today.

Deemed as one of England’s greatest songwriters and performers, in recent years a growing number of younger musicians and audiences have been discovering his music. Jamie T, Kate Nash and Hard-Fi amongst many others have all name-checked Billy as a great influence on their career.

In 2008, Billy’s ‘Mr. Love & Justice’ album was released to much critical acclaim, and in the same year he was awarded Q magazine’s prestigious ‘Classic Songwriter’ award. Billy also supports the ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ initiative, to buy instruments as part of the rehabilitation of prisoners in UK jails.

Billy Bragg continues to delight live audiences with his unique performance. His incredible musical catalogue spans 13 albums and includes the publically celebrated tracks A New England, Sexuality and Waiting for the Great Leap Forward.

“Willy Barrett says he isn’t “Wild” anymore: just livid. Barrett himself is still best known for his previous partnership with the equally indefinable John Otway (‘Beware of the flowers ‘cos I’m sure they’re gonna get you’, for example) but he has moved on since the heady days of the 70s. He is, however, one the most accomplished multi-instrumentalists working today and played amazingly dextrous blues, neo-spanish, jazz, rock and folk with aplomb, barely sneaking a look at the fretboard of his guitar as he did so.

But it’s a band. The classically trained Mary Holland plays cello, keyboards and sings wonderfully whilst fielding her bandmates’ rather twisted sense of humour and John Devine, when he is not fixating on nurses and mooses (best not to ask) matches Barrett’s fluency on uilleann pipes, flute, keyboards and an array of percussion.”

Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne JINSKI are two highly individual guitarists/musicians with strong distinctive voices. JINSKI have a wealth of great original songs that draw upon acoustic roots and country music whilst remaining resolutely modern. JINSKI play songs that tell stories of love, joy, loneliness and longing. Intricate, soulful, beautiful songs, foot stomping, sing-a-long, raucous songs; music for the head and the heart, full of passion and originality.

CALLING ALL CREATIVES!
Kendal Calling would like to invite any one who is involved in arts within Eden to come and be a part of the event this summer. The festival has been grown form very humble beginnings and has always supported local music, arts and produce.

We think it is vitally important that this continues and are actively looking for artists, performers, stalls and anything else that is from the Eden Valley or close by to be a part of the event. We are actively prioritising local submissions so please get in touch whatever your idea.

The festival takes place from the 30th July to 1st August and plays host to dance, music, performance art, art installations, comedy, spoken word and alot more.

If you would like to get involved then please check the contacts page at www.kendalcalling.com for direct emails. Please place EDEN ARTS in capitals in your submission.

Thanks
