Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition and Awards: Open for Submissions

C-Art is encouraging artists to apply for membership to one of the largest network of artists in Cumbria alongside the hugely successful open studios and also offering the opportunity to submit work to the second Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition and Awards 2016.

The annual event and awards, in association with Cumbria Life, will take place throughout Cumbria with the accompanying exhibition being held in the main gallery at Rheged, Penrith from 9th September – 13th November 2016.

There are three categories to enter, with a prize of £500 up for grabs for each winner. The categories are: Visual Artist of the Year, The People’s Choice award and The Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year.  The deadline for submissions to this year’s awards is 24th June 2016.

Artists who are based in Cumbria, and who are working in either visual or applied arts are encouraged to enter. Previous entrants have submitted a huge variety of work, including sculpture, video pieces, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic art, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and furniture designs, metalwork, pottery, mosaic art, and glassware.

The judging panel will be made up of two arts professionals including Eliza Bonham Carter, Curator and Head of the Royal Academy Schools, and a team of young curators, who will select the exhibition content and the Visual Artist of the Year award winner. The People’s Choice award winner will be selected by visitors to the exhibition. These awards will be presented alongside the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year award winner will be chosen by the artists whose work is selected for the exhibition.

Jo Bramley-Wright, C-Art Project Manager, said: ‘’Visitors to Cumbria in September will be treated to a profusion of creative events including the successful annual open studios, giving visitors a fantastic opportunity to see behind the scenes in artists working spaces. There will also be a number of special exhibitions taking place in participating galleries and of course the Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition at Rheged featuring some very exciting guest artists”.

John Stokes, Arts Manager, at The Rheged Centre, said: ‘‘The C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition is a surprising survey of the inventive and accomplished work being created by artists and makers across Cumbria. We are always astounded at the variety of applications over a broad range of art forms, from Cumbria’s familiar and beloved Landscape Painters to the new wave of young artists working in installation and digital media. All this is brought together in an exhibition, packed to the rafters with talent, variety and inspiration.’’

To be eligible for the exhibition and award you must either be from Cumbria or live and work in Cumbria. Entry is free to C-Art members. Cumbrian artists, who are not C-Art members, are encouraged to submit up to three pieces of work, produced no earlier than 2015, these entrants will be subject to a £25.00 entry fee.

The deadline for applications to C-Art membership and open studios is 12 noon Friday 25th March. The deadline for submissions to the exhibition is 12 noon on Friday 24th June. Successful applicants will be asked to submit work to Rheged from 8th August – details will be forwarded to the successful entrants. In addition a Private Viewing of the exhibition will be held on Thursday 8th September between 6.00pm & 8.00pm, to which all applicants will be invited.
