Eden Artist on Fourth Plinth

Eden Artist Janis Young has won the chance to stand on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of Antony Gormley’s ‘One and Other’ project. Every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break beginning on 6 July, a different person will make the plinth their own – an uninterrupted succession of 2400 volunteers creating a unique portrait of the UK in the 21st century. The 2,400 participants who will make the plinth their own, represent every corner of the UK in proportion to its population: 277 participants from the North West, 71 from Northern Ireland, 304 from London and so on – the opportunity of a lifetime, to become a living monument and join the likes of Horatio Nelson, George IV and those enormous lions!

Janis just heard that she was selected this week, with a time slot of 5- 6am on Saturday 25 July, and is absolutely delighted about the prospect: ‘Besides recording the sounds of London at 5am, I’m planning to photograph and sketch the view from the plinth and then convert everything to tactile images so that I can share my experience with my visually impaired friends as well as other friends and family,’ she said.

Are any other ‘plinthers’ or ‘plinthians’ out there, in Eden or in wider Cumbria? Do let us know!
