Weft Studio is an exciting working arts and crafts studio and shop located in Carlisle’s historic quarter. Mainly supporting local artists it is currently hosting two textile artists specialising in weaving and mixed media. A chance to see the making processes behind a piece of work, catch a demonstration or discover unique hand-made gifts. Also regular workshops.

Alan Stones and Rebecca Payn have well-established painting and print-making studios where they make oil paintings, drawings and original lithographs using stone and plate lithography. Visitors are given a warm welcome and an opportunity to see work in progress, to view work on display, to browse and also to buy directly from the studio.

Courtyard Gallery sells a high standard of work solely from the British Isles. The gallery is hidden in a courtyard half way up the main street of Boroughgate, in one of the most charming corners of Appleby-in-Westmorland. On entering the gallery by the courtyard steps, you will find a collection of original paintings and etchings, ceramics, (both local and from other parts of the country), glass, a selection of designer jewellery plus other craft items and greetings cards. Tea and coffee can be enjoyed whilst browsing.

Penrith Museum is situated in an Elizabethan building converted by Eden District Council in 1990, adjacent to Penrith Tourist Information Centre. The Museum also has a gallery with a year-round programme of exhibitions of both historical and contemporary arts.

Situated in the small hamlet of Melkinthorpe, approximately 4 miles south of Penrith, just off the A6. Red Barn, formerly Foster’s Barn, has been converted to provide two exciting gallery spaces. The Upper Gallery is devoted to painting and sculptural pieces. The Lower Gallery concentrates on applied arts: glass, ceramics and jewellery.

Ground Floor – shows the work of Syl & Ray Macro – Syl specialises in ceramic wall panels, vase forms & bowls using a technique of coloured clay assemblage. Ray makes tall elegant pierced wall lights inspired by growth patterns of trees, using a technique of hollow extrusion. Upper Gallery – 4/6 changing exhibitions each year featuring different potters & ceramic artists.

The Scar Art Gallery

The Scar Gallery shows the work of David William Morris and Caroline A Metcalfe-Gibson (with some work by other artists living locally). David’s paintings (mostly in oil, but some also in acrylic, watercolour and pastel) are often intuitive explorations of figures and landscapes, sometimes abstracted and usually colourful. Caroline’s work is based on sharply observed drawing, often in pen and ink of places of buildings characteristic of the area. Her watercolours are more freely applied, but none-the-less derive from close observation.
Open: Fridays 2pm-5pm and Saturdays 10am-5pm, Easter to end of October.

Upfront gallery is located in a rural setting in a beautifully converted 17th Century barn. The gallery presents a changing programme of exhibitions, in four individual gallery spaces, each exhibition lasting for around six weeks. (Workshops and an associated series of events accompany the exhibitions). We also have an associated shop area where you can indulge in a range of goods including work by local makers and various cards.

Under the banner of Craftsmen Upstairs, a group of Cumbrian craftsworkers are now selling gifts and furniture from the gallery. The crafts on sale at present range from traditional wooden toys and colourful ceramics, to exquisite handcrafted wooden boxes, bowls and furniture. There is jewellery, hats and handbags designed and made by talented local artists, as well as wall hangings and greetings cards.
