Illuminating Hardians Wall 13 March, take part!

Hundreds of people from across the country and overseas will have the chance to take part in one of the most spectacular events planned in Britain during 2010. We are looking for 500 people to help create a line of light from one side of Britain to the other, along the length of Hadrian’s Wall, on 13th March 2010.

Each of the volunteer ‘Illuminators’ will be part of a small team responsible for lighting one of the 500 individual points of light that will be placed at 250 metre intervals along the route of the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.
The first of the lights will be illuminated at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend in the North East of England. Each of the other lights will then be lit in sequence by the Illuminators, with the line of light reaching Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast about an hour later.

Carol Bell, Head of Programme Development for culture10 at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said, “Our ambition is to involve as many people as possible in this event which celebrates our fantastic landscape, and we encourage audiences to help shape the cultural offer of the region, actively taking part in our festivals and events by ‘doing, not just viewing’.”
Anyone who would like to be one of the Illuminators will need to register on the website at www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com before 22nd February.

Illuminators must be aged 18 or over. All the volunteers will receive a special scroll commemorating their involvement in the event.

For those keen to watch rather than actively participate as an illuminator, two free events will take place, one at Segedunum in Wallsend where the line of light will start and the other at Carlisle in Cumbria, to welcome the light into the North West. A very limited number of tickets will soon be made available for the stewarded viewing points along the route and must be pre-booked via www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com. Please note these countryside viewing points will offer limited opportunities in comparison to the two main events.

Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall is an ambitious project led by Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd which forms part of the world-class programme of festivals and events developed by culture10 in the North East of England and the Lakes Alive programme in Cumbria presented by Kendal Arts International and Manchester International Arts. Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall is also a flagship event of British Tourism Week 2010.
