World famous Shakespeare’s Globe returns to Brougham Hall this summer
Shakespeare’s Globe is taking to the road again this summer with a new production of Shakespeare’s intellectual masterpiece Hamlet, which will perform at Brougham Hall, Penrith on Saturday the 18th & Sunday the 19th August, as part of its 2012 UK tour. This event has been organised by Eden Arts as part of its new programme of outdoor summer events. Directed by the Globe’s Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst, a small troupe of actors will present a stripped down version of Shakespeare’s greatest play in this beautiful open air setting, reviving the old Globe principle of outdoor playing.
Learning of the king his father’s death, Hamlet comes home to find his uncle married to his mother and installed on the Danish throne. At night, the ghost of the old king demands that Hamlet avenge his ‘foul and most unnatural murder’. Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, tragic depth and wild humour, Hamlet is the fullest expression of Shakespeare’s genius.
A handful of players will perform a raw, thrillingly elemental production of this inexhaustible play on an Elizabethan style stage, evoking the touring tradition of the Globe’s forefathers. As Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole explains; “The Globe was born out of a touring company culture, and that culture remained vital to it while it flourished. It was with great pride that we resurrected this tradition in summer 2007 after a 400 year break, and we are delighted to be visiting so many stunning venues again this year, including Brougham Hall.”
Under the leadership of Dominic Dromgoole, Shakespeare’s Globe theatre season plays in repertory from April to October annually, and has gained an international reputation for performance excellence. The regional tours have gained an enthusiastic following in the UK and Europe, and 2012 marks the Globe’s sixth year of this popular summer event.
The performances are promising to be very popular so book early to avoid disappointment. They will take place outdoors so please bring a picnic-rug or low backed seat and suitable clothing for all weather conditions. The play will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather conditions. Please do feel free to bring a picnic or enjoy the BBQ and refreshments that will be on sale at Brougham Hall.
