Promoting new walks around Kirkby Stephen

WALKERS are receiving a warm welcome in Kirkby Stephen where organisers have launched two new walking programmes for 2010.

Kirkby Stephen Walkers are Welcome steering group have been busy since they were awarded accreditation in April 2009.

The two new programmes have been co-ordinated by Walkers are Welcome steering group member Upper Eden Community Plan Project Officer, Libby Bateman.

Rights of Way problems have been rectified working closely with Capita and the Cumbria County Council Countryside Access Team.

And quarterly newsletters are being sent out to local accommodation providers to keep them updated with news and information.

Ann Sandell, communications officer for the Town Forum said: “We held a drop-in for further information and help for local businesses with assistance from Cumbria Tourism.

“Enhanced walking information and display is now in pride of place at Kirkby Stephen Tourist Information Centre thanks to the help of Eden District Councils tourism department and TIC staff.

“Our new website has been launched, see www.walkeden.org and additional information for walkers is being continually added to make this a one stop shop for walking in our area. We are now working on a refreshment page where local establishments that welcome walkers can have there details advertised free of charge.

“If your business welcomes walkers or you have any suggestions that may be considered by the steering group in the coming months, we will be delighted to hear from you, see the website or make contact through the Kirkby Stephen Council and Community Centre
