Winter Droving 2013

The Winter Droving event on 30 November 2013 will develop the success of the inaugural event in 2012 that saw 3000 people come to town to take part and witness the procession and entertainment. Listening to the feedback it was decided to repeat it in 2013 and to expand the activity into the day-time. With the support of Eden District Council, the Business Improvement District, Penrith Partnership, the Penrith Lottery, Acorn Marketing and lots of local businesses we have been able to make big plans!

What’s New?

2013 will see the town centre closed to traffic on the day so that a traditional market and fun and games can take place on the streets. The aim is once again to show off what is best about the local area and produce and to kick off the Christmas and winter season with a bang. The market will be enhanced with street entertainment, live bands, craft activities, rides, races and games – all with an agricultural theme and not an xbox in sight!!

The market will be open from 10am and the entertainment will kick off at 12pm. The magical torch lit procession will begin at 5pm and will be followed by a spectacular finale in Great Dockray! Town centre parking will be free from 10.30am.

Ways To Get Involved!

FANCY DRESS – there will be a droving themed fancy dress competition at this year’s event for adults, children and dogs too! Come along to the event wearing a mask or dressed as an animal or drover for a chance to win prizes and a sought after ‘ Best in Show’ rosette. There will also be a prize for the best dressed dog – a wolf in sheep’s clothing! Judging will take place outside the Penrith TIC at 12pm.

THE DROVERS CUP – The Drovers Cup, sponsored by Kyloes Inns and run by Penrith Leisure Centre is a light-hearted bit of fun for teams to compete in rural games, tug of war, hay bale relay, pint pass plus a meat eating competition. It’s free to take part and there are prizes to be won! The competition will take place in the town centre during the afternoon of the event and taking part will be a great way of promoting your club, team or organisation. You will need to enter a team of 8 people that are 18 years old and over – sign up below asap as spaces are limited.

THE PROCESSION – Be at the heart of the magic and sign up to take part in the procession! Before the event we will e-mail instructions on when and where to gather – the procession will set off at 5pm. Torch bearers are encouraged to come dressed as a drover or wear an animal mask, fire torches will be issued at the meeting point (over 16s only). Young ‘uns should wear an animal mask and come as a sheep, goose, cow, pig, deer, chicken or a sheepdog. Spread the word, gather in the herds!

WORKSHOPS – Why not make an animal mask or lantern at home or in school or come along to one of The Winter Droving workshops:

23rd November: 10-1pm & 2pm-4pm at Rheged Centre
