C-Art announces a new initiative for the second Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition and Awards 2016.

The annual event in association with Cumbria Life, set to take place in the main gallery at Rheged, Penrith from 9th September – 13th November 2016 will be introducing a new selection process.

The judging panel will be made up of a team of Young Curators headed by two arts professionals, a representative from within the county and another from outside of the county.  They will select the exhibition content and the Visual Artist of the Year award winner.

With that in mind C-Art are keen to hear from anyone aged between 16-24, who is interested in art or is thinking of applying to study art at university, or has recently returned from university and would like to gain some experience in the art world…

All you have to do is submit a short form expressing your interest, then if you are successfully selected you will be asked to attend an interview at Rheged, Penrith, for the final selection process.

Those who are selected as Young Curators will work alongside several leading arts professionals, including Eliza Bonham Carter, Curator and Head of the Royal Academy Schools, one of London’s leading Art Schools.  The Young Curators, with assistance from Eliza, will select the exhibition and short list the winner for the Cumbrian Artist of the Year award. But that’s not all there will be an opportunity to visit London and go behind the scenes at the Royal Academy School to learn insider tips about curating and what goes on behind the scenes in galleries…

Eliza Bonham Carter, Curator and Head of the Royal Academy Schools, said: ‘’I was delighted to be invited to work with the C-Art Young Curators to help select the work for the exhibition. It’s very important for young people considering a career in the arts to have the chance to see the work that goes on in museums and galleries, and to get a sense of how professional artists go about making a living. I’m very much looking forward to the working with a group of bright, ambitious young people.’’

Alongside this opportunity young artists, aged 15-24 years, are invited to submit work to the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award 2016 with the chance of having their work exhibited and of winning a £500 prize. Now in it’s third year the award aims to showcase the very best of young Cumbrian creative talent and create opportunities for young artists in the area.
