Ullswater Droving 2023
21st October 2023 - 5.30pm
Please note- there will not be an Ullswater Droving in 2024.
As part of the Winter Droving event, on Saturday 21 October, as dusk descends, we will be âWelcoming the Wolfâ in a spectacular start to the Droving season, and giving you the chance to join in as a participant in a joyful collective experience.
This special event is a unique opportunity to participate in creating a magical artwork in the landscape using Geolights first developed for last yearâs Green Space Dark Skies event, as featured on BBC Countryfile.
Applications are now closed to become a Lumenator. There will be limited space to join in on the day- please get in touch if you would like to participate info@edenarts.co.uk
You can watch a short film about Green Space Dark Skies here.
The inimitable Spark! will also return to Welcome the Wolf marking the beginning of the Droving week in Pooley Bridge.
After a short performance in Glenridding Spark! will sail along Ullswater to Pooley Bridge. The Ullswater Steamer carrying Spark! will depart from Glenridding at 16.35 and Spark! will arrive at the Pooley Bridge Pier at 17.35.
From here they will process through the village of Pooley Bridge followed by the Lumenators. This will be the main performance by Spark! and the best place to see them forming part of a spectacular finale for spectators of the event.
This very special event is brought to you by Eden Arts working in collaboration with the celebrated Walk the Plank.
Visitors have the opportunity to participate in this event by becoming a Lumenator or be a spectator of the procession with a grand finale from Spark!

Ullswater Droving â Frequently Asked Questions
LUMENATORS
What will I actually do as a Lumenator?
Each Lumenator will carry a specially designed hand-held Geolight as part of a group of people in the procession through the town and into the field location. The movement of the people and lights will create patterns in the landscape at dusk. These patterns will be filmed from above by drone cameras and will form part of a short promotional film. This film will be available to view on the Walk the Plank website.
Can people who are not Lumenators turn up to watch?
Only those people that have signed up in advance as Lumenators will be able to take part on the day. We are collecting minimal personal data from each registered Lumenator so that we can effectively manage numbers at the event. Spectators can watch the procession but there will be no spectators in the field as they will not be able to view the artwork from above, and the Walk the Plank team requires a designated area for filming.
Can I take part if I have access needs?
The walk from the pier to the performance field is around 0.8km.
The Geolight activity will take place in a field which may be muddy. bIf you arrive for the rehearsal at 2.30pm, you will be required till 7.15pm, or you can arrive at 5pm and you will be required till 7.15pm but you will have a smaller role in the artwork.
Each Lumenator will be supplied with In-Ear Monitors to receive instructions. If you cannot wear In-Ear Monitors, we do have alternative options.
If you have any access needs that youâd like to discuss with us, for example a BSL interpreter, please contact Jo- jo@edenarts.co.uk or 01768 899444
