5 Years on - Bronny Salter, Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2015
The Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year is open to people living, working or studying in or from Cumbria, who are 15 - 24 years old. Over the 6 years of awards and exhibitions, the awards have been won by artists working in all mediums, including sound art, installation, animation and video.
We caught up with our 2015 winner Bronny Salter, about winning the award, and how her career has developed since...
"Winning the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year award in 2015 was an unforgettable experience. I felt very proud to win this award and it gave me a big confidence boost with my work. At the time I was studying a degree in Animation at the University of the West of England in Bristol. I spent 3 years there and graduated in June 2016.
During my degree I tried to gain as much work experience as I could as I knew this would benefit me once I had graduated. Through a combination of emails, phone calls and getting to know people, I was able to gain experience on a stop motion feature film in Wales, prop making at Aardman and teaching experience on an Animation course for young people.
A few months after I graduated, I began work at Aardman Animations as a Model Maker. I was absolutely thrilled to land this work and Aardman has become a huge part of my career as a maker. I have been working as a freelancer there, and for other companies such as Mangostone, for the past 4 years and have absolutely loved it.
I feel grateful to have learnt so much and met so many wonderful people in that time and I’m excited to see where Model Making takes me in the future."
